Boeing 717-200 earns joint FAA and JAA certification

The Boeing 717-200 Jetliner recently received joint certification from the US Federal Aviation Administration and Europe's Joint Aviation Authorities for the airplane's type design. In addition, the FAA granted production certification.
Jim Phillips, vice president and general manager of the Long Beach Division,where the 717 is being assembled, said:
This is an important milestone for the 717 program ... The 717 has successfully passed all of the stringent testing requirements mandated by the FAA and JAA, and is now ready to enter passenger service with airlines in the USA and Europe.The 717 certification was conducted under an unprecedented FAA/JAA program called Concurrent and Cooperative Certification ... This is the first airplane to have a single basis of certification, which was developed and implemented jointly by a FAA/JAA team.
