The Ministry of Defence recently announced the appointment of Sir John Egan as chairman of NewDERA, to work with chief executive, Sir John Chisholm, in taking the larger part of the Defence Evaluation & Research Agency (DERA)into the private sector as a public private partnership.
DERA is a highly successful agency providing independent scientific advice primarily to the UK's Ministry of Defence but also to an increasing range of private sector civil and military customers. As a result of proposals within Britain's Strategic Defence Review aimed at harnessing the value of DERA's knowledge base for the wider benefit of the UK economy, plans have been developed to create NewDERA as a government owned plc from around three-quarters of the current agency.
Sir John Egan brings to the role of chairman extensive experience in leading both Jaguar and British Airports Authority (BAA) to success in the private sector.
DERA has also announced two further appointments to its senior management team. Graham Love, formerly chief executive of COMAX, has been appointed as the chief finance officer of the privatised company. Graham was previously finance director of DERA from 1992 to 1996 before assuming the role of managing director of its Support Services Division, which he took successfully into the private sector in 1997 as COMAX Secure Business Services.
Brenda Jones, who is currently marketing director with IBM, Northern EMEA(Europe, Middle East and Africa), has joined DERA as its marketing director. The initial aim of the new marketing director role is to position DERA quickly as a leading business to business brand based on its capabilities as an innovative,hi-tech solutions provider as well as to develop new science and technology business streams.
