RYE CMS offers reverse engineering package to reduce digitising times
Keywords: Reverse engineering, Software, Scanners
An integrated scanning system and reverse engineering package developed jointly by Renishaw pie, RYE CMS and Osai UK is now available as optional equipment with virtually any RYE CMS CNC router or pattern-making machine. Designed to make sophisticated reverse engineering and 3D model digitising capability affordable for market sectors such as mould and die making, woodworking and aerospace maintenance, the scanning and reverse engineering package makes it possible for data from 3D irregular and freeform shapes to be rapidly captured and processed using Renishaw's TRACECUT, a PC-based scanning/CAM software package (Plate 2).
RYE CMS emphasises that the key benefit is the speed and flexibility of operation that RYE CMS machine users gain from the system.
With the scanning facility built into the machine, there is no need to buy expensive dedicated scanners" explained Adam Kingdon, managing director of RYE CMS. "Prototypes or hand-made patterns cannot be scanned into a CAD programme,or direct to the Osai CNC controller to create a model directly".

The system is made up of a Renishaw analogue scanning probe providing data direct to the Osai 10-series CNC controller. The Osai controller's communications are directly linked using Ethernet to a PC running Renishaw's TRACECUT software. This is said to enable the system to read machine position and probe deflection, and to send scanning commands which achieve a tight servo loop, providing faster and more accurate scan data.
The Osai 10/510 controller specially developed for the system allows real-time access from TRACECUT to all the internal CNC data to fine tune the application and deliver the best possible result. The controller's high-speed cutting feature, which uses polynomial interpolation to achieve greater accuracy, is available to the system as required.
Mould and die manufacturers often have a need to digitise the design of old parts for which there are no drawings, or to collect surface data from master models or patterns. The integrated scanning system and reverse engineering package that can be supplied as an integral part of RYE CMS machines makes both tasks possible with a high standard of accuracy and precision and dramatically reduced scanning times.
