Two nose assembly options

Keywords: Installation, Assembly, Continuous processes

Textron Fastening Systems reports that it has added two new nose assembly options to its range of Genesis installation tools designed to place breakstem and lockbolt fasteners (Plate 8).

Lightweight and durable, Genesis tools claim to reduce assembly time to a minimum. With an average cycle time of just 1 s, they are thought to be ideal for high volume production processes.

Designed for such continuous flow applications or environments where the nose equipment requires frequent cleaning, the new option of quick release nose equipment is said to enable a tool’s nose cartridge to be changed on-line within a matter of 10 s.

The used cartridge can then be cleaned and serviced off-line and returned ready for the next change over. Available on all Genesis models, the quick release nose equipment will place the same range of Avdel breakstem fasteners as standard nose equipment.

Genesis installation tools will reportedly place Maxlok and Avtainer lockbolts together with many other different manufacturers’ brands. The second new nose assembly option extends this range further to include the company’s 4.8 mm (3/16′) and 6.4 mm (1/4′) diameter Avdelok lockbolts, which can be placed using the largest of the Genesis tools (G4).

Besides the two new nose assemblies, TFS is also offering three new bespoke options, which are provided on a one-off basis to allow users to customise the installation tools to their own specific requirements. These comprise a stem extraction system, an extended nose assembly and a sensitive trigger.

The new stem extraction system reportedly allows a tool to stay on-line as the operator no longer has to stop to empty its stem collector. The new system is said to be easily attached by simply unscrewing the existing stem collector and connecting the extraction system.

The extended nose assembly enables fasteners to be placed in deep recesses, which are normally out of the reach of standard nose equipment, while sensitive triggers use the force exerted by pushing the fastener into an application to trigger the installation.

The system, which replaces a tool’s standard pneumatic trigger with a preloaded mechanical version, relies on the fastener being perpendicular to the application otherwise it is impossible to place. This not only increases safety, but also the consistency of fastener placement.
