Bromide-free flame retardant glass cloth tape for aerospace MRO applications

Keywords: Aircraft components, Aerospace industry

3M has launched a new self adhesive glass cloth tape, commonly known as cargo pit tape, that exceeds aerospace flame retardant standards FAR. 25.853 (a)and 25.855 (d). The product is formulated without penta, octa or deca Bromated Diphenyl Ether to comply with the latest EU directives on the use of bromide in aerospace products.

3 M Glass Cloth Tape 398FR is said to be ideal for a wide range of aerospace MRO tasks, wherever “flyaway” materials are needed. Key applications for the new material include cargo area Tedlar panel sealing, window sealing, seat repair, insulation splicing and the sealing of air ducts in aircraft interiors.

The 3 M pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive used on the tape delivers consistent performance when applied over existing tape splicing, reportedly bonds well to Tedlar and other common aerospace materials and maintains its adhesion for extended periods of time through wide climate and temperature variations. The conformable glass cloth tape is considered effective on uneven cargo panels and resists the wear found in intensively used aviation environments.

“With decades of experience in the development of products for demanding aerospace applications, 3 M has a deep understanding of the industry's MRO requirements,” says Anton Chambers, Aerospace Key Account manager at 3 M. “398FR gives our customers a product that offers the performance they expect from 3 M together with full compliance with existing and anticipated environmental legislation.”

3 M Glass Cloth tape 398FR is approved for MRO use by Boeing, and is included on the latest Boeing QPL (Qualified Product Listing): BMs 5-146 Type 1, Class 1,Grade A approval.

In addition to its bromide-free characteristics, 398FR is said to deliver further environmental benefits thanks to a formulation that avoids the use of heavy metals such as Antimony Trioxide, the use of which is expected to be restricted by the EU. The tape is available in widths from 3/4 to 6in. and with a skip-slit liner for easy customisation.
