Keywords: Plastics, Plastics and rubber technology

The guideline VDI 2014 Part 3 newly released by the VDI Society for Plastics Technologies is a comprehensive guidance for the calculations, which are required for the development of Fibre Reinforces Plastics (FRP) components.

In contrast to components made from homogeneous materials for which only the structure must be designed and dimensioned as a whole it is in case of FRP components necessary to “design the material” at the same time. This requires that both during the pre-dimensioning as well as for the final strength verification of the structure, strength analyses of the laminate have to be performed. Between 1995 and 2005 a worldwide significant progress in this field and especially in Germany has been noticed. The application of the new physically based “action plane” fracture criteria of Puck is comprehensively described in the guideline.

In addition all topics, which are essential for the calculation of FRP components are covered such as the modelling of various lamina types, the laminate analysis by means of netting theory and Classical Laminate Theory, elastic stability analyses, joints and cyclically loaded laminates. The content of the guideline under consideration exceeds by far the original draft dated 1997.

The VDI guideline is released in German and English language. The guideline“Development of fibre reinforced plastics components, Analysis” is available from September 2006 at the price of 183,60e.
