Accreditation for respected materials course
Cranfield University has received official confirmation of professional accreditation from the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) for its respected MSc in Advanced Materials. The IOM3 has accredited the programme as providing formal systematic further learning for the UK Engineering Council. Graduates of this course will now receive automatic registration for Professional Membership of IOM3 (MIMMM) and Chartered Engineer (C Eng.).
Dr Bob Priest, Chair of the Visiting Panel, commented in the accreditation report “The IOM3 Panel had been very impressed by the overall qualities of the MSc Programme in Advanced Materials, which clearly attracted talented, committed students, who were evidently readily employable. These students were being offered a sound and useful learning experience, with rigorous academic standards, quality teaching, good tutorial support, and access to excellent support facilities. The strong, working and supportive linkages with industry also impressed the Panel.”
Dr Sue Impey, Course Director, commented; “This is great news for the Advanced Materials MSc programme. It has long been recognised by industry as a source of highly skilled graduates, and the accreditation will both strengthen its reputation in industry and provide graduates with the extra edge they need when seeking employment.”
The Advanced Materials MSc programme provides a fundamental understanding of materials' properties and their processing. Developments in the design, production and manufacture of aircraft, cars, electronic equipment and domestic appliances, depend critically upon optimising existing materials and use of novel materials and an understanding of both advanced processing techniques and the latest computer-based design procedures.
The course had been awarded full accreditation for a period of five years, backdated from October 2004 to October 2008 entries.
