Helicool thread milling solution
A Vardex Threading Solutions' Helicool helical flute solid carbide thread mill is reported to have outperformed alternative tooling by at least 20 per cent in the production of a 13mm diameter internal thread in a stainless steel hydraulic actuator component for the aerospace industry. And the Vardex solution is also said to have produced a far better surface finish into the bargain.
As part of the user's continuous improvement programme to maintain/ improve thread production and thread finish, several tooling suppliers were invited to conduct thread milling trials on the component being produced from the 190Hb stainless at a cutting speed of 110rn/min, and at 2,500rev/min and a feed rate of 0.04mm/flute.
The Helicool threading solution from Vargus Tooling reportedly took just 10s to produce the thread, and exhibited a tool life of 500 pieces-far outstripping the current production method and being at least 20 per cent better than the new alternatives.
