Tooling giant Walter GB has utilised a fine grain carbide to modify its Prototype solid carbide thread milling cutters for hard machining performance at high-feed rates and with longer tool life – and thus, reduced cost per thread.

The new coating – which contains higher than ever Wolfram carbide content – combines with the tool’s flute design and finish (polish),as well as AlTiN coating to successfully operate at a reported 30 per cent higher feed rates than previously possible in materials from 48 HRC.

Even when using maximum cutting data, tool edge life is said to increase by a factor of five to ten (Figure 1).
