As the new Editor of Agricultural Finance Review (AFR), I would like to use this space to thank the outgoing Editor, Calum G. Turvey of Cornell University, for his incredible service to our journal. Dr Turvey was the Editor-in-Chief of AFR for more than 15 years. Under Dr Turvey’s leadership, AFR grew from a niche publication to the primary field journal in the world. When Dr Turvey became the Editor in 2005, the journal published roughly 20 papers per year across two issues, through Cornell University. Dr Turvey oversaw the transition to Emerald Publishing in 2009. Since that time, AFR has grown to publish 40 papers per year across five issues. Dr Turvey leveraged the advantages provided by Emerald Publishing to make AFR the global leader in scholarship related to credit, risk management and policy in the agricultural sector.
Through AFR, Dr Turvey built a strong community that now reaches all corners of the world. Dr Turvey is a constant ambassador for AFR. Dr Turvey worked to recruit potential authors in every professional interaction. He was well known for the refrain, “If you write three to five papers a year, please send at least one of them to AFR.” As a result of his continual effort, AFR is central to a global network of authors and readers. For example, the current volume of AFR includes papers written by authors from every continent, save Antarctica.
Dr Turvey truly loves economic research. This attribute is best represented by the care he demonstrated for the work of graduate students, junior faculty members and beginning researchers. Dr Turvey worked tirelessly to help improve the quality of work from AFR contributors. He would often provide detailed guidance and suggestions for those first learning to navigate the publication process. I, along with countless others, benefited greatly from Dr Turvey’s guidance and suggestions as the Editor of AFR.
As the new Editor of AFR, I have the good fortunate of inheriting a journal that is both successful and growing. I hope to continue to build on the foundation that Dr Turvey has established.
