The text that follows was submitted by Aslib to the Committee on Social Studies in March 1964 in response to an invitation received from the Assistant Secretary of the Committee for comments and evidence from research organizations. The Committee on Social Studies was set up in 1963 under the chairmanship of Lord Heyworth. Its terms of reference are ‘To review the research at present being done in the field of social studies in government departments, universities and other institutions, and to advise whether changes are needed in the arrangements for supporting and co‐ordinating this research’.
