The resource Management initiative in large general hospitals within the NHS aims to stimulate, encourage and develop a management process involving doctors, nurses and other clinical and managerial staff in strategic and operational decision‐making. This process is underpinned by a patient‐based information system which is timely, accessible and credible to all participants. Management processes and information systems must be robust and flexible to cope with change, and to maximise the benefit to patients of changes in medical practice and resources. While existing technologies make successful implementation possible, further developments in hardware and software are required before a truly integrated workstation is a reality in the complex technical environment of the general hospital.
