The purpose of this list is to indicate some of the tools which may help those concerned in editing and publishing scientific and technical papers to present their material in the clearest, most effective and most economic manner. Whether authors or not, they should certainly be familiar with at least some of the guides to good technical writing in the foregoing bibliography; they should especially heed the compiler's opening remarks, and above all the final passage. But there are other problems besetting the technical editor—layout, references, transliteration and technical symbols, for example—problems which are greatly simplified by the adoption of standard practices where these have been established. Some of the most useful recommendations are not as well known as they should be, partly because they are not always readily available and partly through lack of publicity, and it is hoped here to some extent to remedy this.
