This book, as indicated by its title, concentrates on higher education and academic libraries in six chapters plus many useful appendices. The first chapter is on the importance of information and the second on the organisation of higher education in India, covering the role of such bodies as the UGC and All India Council of Higher Education. The third examines the status and role of academic libraries and their problems, also considering UGC efforts to promote their development. The fourth focuses on library automation and the role of government agencies in taking the initiative and providing support for this task. The fifth lists some of the barriers to library development in India, and the sixth is a sort of epilogue on the development of libraries envisaged in the ninth five‐year plan. The appendices are especially valuable, presenting government and other documents, policy resolutions and reports and many statistical tables. Although marred by misprints and typographical errors, the book provides a useful resource for anyone concerned with higher education libraries in India.
