20th IATUL Conference, 16-22 May 1999, Technical University of Crete
The Board of the International Association of Technological University Libraries (IATUL) and the Library of the Technical University of Crete take great pleasure in inviting you to Chania to take part in the 1999 IATUL Conference. This will be the first time an IATUL Conference has been held in Greece. You are invited to submit a proposal for a presentation and to join in the discussion about the future of libraries and the challenges facing us on the threshold of the new millennium.
Important dates
December 1998: All proposals and abstracts due to programme subcommittee.
Mid-February 1999: Acceptance of program items confirmed by programme subcommittee.
10 April 1999: Completed papers due to programme subcommittee.
The conference theme, "Libraries of the future in human communication", encompasses a number of sub-themes.
Sub-theme 1: The changing role of the library missions and ethics. Changes in higher education result in new goals and missions. Libraries and librarians have to be aware of the changes that surround them and be prepared to play new roles. We have to recognise and respond to the academic environment: its structure and spirit,forecasts on the future of academic organisations, the knowledge-based society,new teaching and educational methods, the growth of flexible and distance learning and the role of the library in this context.
Sub-theme 2: The changing role of the library new organisations. Changes in libraries in response to changes in the academic environment can be seen in library management,organisational structures, the need for system methodology and system analysis.
Sub-theme 3: Focus on users. Users have to be placed in central focus; this can be seen in the development of user-centred libraries, new types of reference services, user education in information literacy.
Sub-theme 4: The librarian of the twenty-first century. The following topics will be included: staff development, staff participation in library management, staff assessment procedures, staff satisfaction.
Sub-theme 5: Total quality management: from industry to higher education and libraries. In order to be effective, libraries need to measure their performance rigorously against the expectations and real needs of their clients. This involves total quality management, performance measurement, assessment of outcomes, responding to changing needs.
