Chinese geographic names: from Wade-Giles to Pinyin

The OCLC CJK Users Group announces that a new Web page on the Chinese Geographic Names Project is now available. The Users Group Web site is at http://sun3.lib.uci.edu/~oclccjk/,and the specific page for the project is classified under "Internet Resources". The project files may also be retrieved directly from its URL, http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~fyks/placename/This Web page of Chinese geographic names is a reference tool to help librarians and library users to accommodate the change in Chinese place name romanisation from Wade-Giles to Pinyin. It is based on the list of Chinese conventional place names, provided by LC Cataloging Policy and Support Office (CPSO). There are several special features of this Web page:

  • 1.

Tables to show correspondence between Wade-Giles, former LC Subject Headings, revised Subject Headings, Pinyin and Chinese script.

  • 2.

There are GB and Big5 versions to view Chinese script in simplified and traditional characters respectively. Image versions without Chinese software will be created later.

  • 3.

The tables contain several categories of Chinese geography and jurisdiction. Indexes and links are provided for each province and region with their individual cities and counties.

  • 4.

This Web page also links to related resources such as the most recent Pinyin conversion information, reference materials, and other interesting links.
