In investigating how to automate a suburban public library, it is found that an integrated, multifunction system will serve best. The system will be based on a single master file to provide the bibliographic data required for a number of different subsystems. The file itself will be based on full MARC records to allow for topical, keyword, or Boolean searching. The desired system will provide a patron access catalog, as well as acquisitions, cataloging, serials control, and journal citation subsystems. Proposed hardware and software requirements and their costs are discussed.
