The October 1987 market crash left a lot of library administrators asking, “When the Dow Jones crests, how are libraries affected? Although it's impossible to predict with certainty what's ahead for our organizations, there are some things we can anticipate: Recession and inflation. Increases in interest rates and declines in the dollar. Shifts in monetary and fiscal policies. All of these are conditions the library manager must navigate. Libraries—along with the rest of society—have to ride the waves of macroeconomic activity.
