Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to suggest approaches for nurturing the kinds of new thinking and new mental models among library staff that will support the development of more sustainable libraries.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper discusses several key components – and problems – to adapting systems for greater sustainability in libraries.
Findings
Human behavior patterns are entrenched and grounded in perceptions and expectations about the world that often are unconscious.
Originality/value
Suggestions for replacing assumptions of growth with ideas of sustainability and learning are offered.
