For some time I have been intrigued by the idea of using a device to scan a printed report and save the image to a file that could be manipulated by a word processor or a spreadsheet program. But each time I inquired at a store or read a review of a scanner, my idea was abruptly scotched by the information that the scanned and saved image was only a “graphic image” and not a manipulatable series of letters and numbers (i.e., a character image commonly referred to as an ASCII file). To do what I wanted to do would require Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software, and that was very expensive.
