Good and bad times (in accounting software)

N. Huber in Accountancy Age (UK), Dec. 1998: p. 24 (1 page)

Reviews activity in the UK accounting software market during 1998, reporting that although over 40 percent of larger companies choose Unix as their operating system, Microsoft's Windows NT is gaining ground (now 21 percent) and its new SQL Server database release will allow it to be scaled up to 1,000 users. Lists some of its SQL partners and suggests that its strategy of giving a free OLAP relational database has"transformed the analytical applications market". Looks at competition in the financial applications and enterprise resource planning markets, citing evidence of falling demand, share prices and profits. Considers future trends (e.g. outsourcing) and the possibility of increased demand for new technology once the year 2000 and euro problems have been resolved.
