Authors' Introductions

Dr E. Lightfoot: Paper 6

Dr Jones, who had done much of the work was in California, and the Paper had therefore been written largely from his doctorial thesis. This research on cranes had begun in 1951 as a project on electrical overhead travelling cranes. Out of this preliminary work they had obtained an approximate method of structural analysis for latticed box girders. They were also able to determine theoretically and experimentally various dynamic effects occurring at full loads. They had discovered the use of Laplace transforms for dealing with transients in vibration problems and had learned not to use gauges unnecessarily.
