Opening address

This symposium is one of the first results of the collaboration between the

Council of Engineering Institutions and the Council for Science and Technology

Institutes. Through their 25 constituent bodies they represent scientists, engin

eers and other technologists totalling some 200000 individuals. Nearly 6 years

ago the Councils set up a joint Technical Committee to consider those subjects

which include more than one discipline, with the aim of defining problems and

encouraging action on them by discussion and other means.

The transportation by road of substances which can prove hazardous is

clearly of interest to both engineers and scientists in a number of disciplines,
