Current developments in Information Technology are rapidly changing the ways in which we communicate research results by enabling timely technology transfer to industry. This paper presents a computer database and a Web-based information system that were developed to efficiently disseminate the results of long-term CANMET and US Army Corps of Engineers studies on the durability of concrete, incorporating supplementary cementations materials. Both information systems help visualize the results of extensive field studies and provide decision support for the design of durable and environmentally friendly concrete for marine projects. The paper discusses some issues associated with the design and use of these information systems. The authors also stress the need to create a virtual collaborative environment for concrete researchers all over the world, that would promote the use of supplementary cementing materials to the construction industry, while at the same time facilitating global cooperation in the area of sustainable development of cement and concrete.
