Many of the papers and much of the time of the Conference are devoted, quite rightly, to future problems of physical resources. Whilst defining these and putting them into the right perspective is important, it is equally important not to overlook human resources, not only in manpower but in the wide range of scientific and technical skills which are available and which could be developed to grapple with such wide-ranging problems. The past 150 years have seen a revolution in technology which has brought with it immense power and a diverse range of materials and material things. These have been exploited to achieve great steps forward in science and technology. The question now is how the evolution of human resources can contribute most effectively to the further development of physical resources, energy and materials.
