Dr R. G. Allen (Director, Water Research Association), who opened the discussion, said that he was going to speak directly to Paper 2, by Mr Pugh although inevitably he would make references to other Papers.

d2. Primarily he wanted to speak on potable water supply. It was important to recognise, however, that water technology was based on a wider field of application. A far greater use of water was made by industry and agriculture and this use was now making a substantial contribution to the know-how which the water undertakings could use. The electricity generating boards already mentioned in the Authors' introductions were using more than ten times the amount of water which went into public supply.
