It can be argued that the most important function of the ICE is the education and training of civil engineers. The theme of this Conference - to identify the types of civil engineer required in the 1990s and determine how best to educate and train them - is uppermost in the deliberations of the ICE at present.
It has been noted that the changing market conditions over the past decade have led to multi-discipline activities within both consultancy and construction organizations with civil engineers generally having wider career opportunities. This Conference has regarded flexibility as a keynote in both education and training in order to satisfy the changing needs of the market place.
