FUTURE NEEDS
MR D. A. WROE, Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council Paper 3, like most of the Papers at this Conference, represents the philosophies of the mature, middle-aged professional. One would not deny that these are the proper people to set the required standards, but perhaps people have fallen into the trap of believing the deities of their own invention.
The Papers make little reference to the needs rather than the requirements pf the civil engineers for the 1990s and beyond. They do not discuss the real needs of the pupil at school, particularly ways to avoid his becoming a scientific moron, although the Chilver points system does help achieve a broader education. However, the requirements for 0 and A levels are well documented. There is no reference to the needs of the undergraduate, although again the requirements, particularly those laid down by the Joint Board of Moderators, are well documented. Perhaps, more important, there is nothing which discusses the needs of the graduate and particularly his role as a trainee.
