The Reservoirs Act 1975 provides a framework for managing the safety of UK dams, and since the implementation of its predecessor the Reservoirs (Safety Provisions) Act in 1930 there have been no dam failures involving loss of life in the UK. However, in order to ensure best practice continues to be used for managing the safety of UK dams, and in common with other industries, we need to increase our understanding of, and where possible quantify, the risk posed by dams in the UK.
