The seismic assessment of a reinforced concrete intake tower in Scotland included a seismic “walk-down” inspection, ambient vibration tests and finite element analyses. The purpose of the inspection was to identify vulnerable features in the operation and structure of the tower. Ambient vibration tests on the tower were conducted to measure its modal properties. These were employed to validate a finite element model. A preliminary elastic seismic analysis of the model was run using synthetic accelerograms. The results indicated a non-linear response and the requirement for further detailed analysis to assess the seismic capacity of the tower.
