This Paper describes the various types of water retaining structure encountered in water supply and wastewater treatment within the water industry. It goes on to describe in some detail the various causes of chemical and physical influences which degrade the reinforced concrete of which many are constructed. The Paper describes proven refurbishment methods for repairing these vital structures to give additional useful design life and concludes with a preferred type of contract strategy for carrying them out in practice.
