As part of the A19 DBFO scheme Autolink Concessionaires (A19) Ltd, a consortium of Amey and Sir Robert McAlpine are responsible for the operation and maintenance of the A19 Trunk Road from Dishforth to Tyne Tunnel. Scott Wilson as their appointed designers have trialed Chloride Extraction as a possible means of repair to the Tees Viaduct Substructures. The substructure of the bridge exhibits deterioration resulting from leakage of the deck joints and subsequent chloride ingress through the cover concrete. Repairs have been ongoing for over a decade and have included the complete demolition and replacement of some pier bents. The trial was carried out to prove the effectiveness of the technique to remove chloride ion to a target threshold level and to examine the risk associated with the potential side effect of generating Alkali Silica Reaction.
