This paper reports on the diagnostic and repair of honeycomb concrete in the new Algiers airport building. The building is a reinforced concrete building of more than 80 thousand square meters of floor slabs supported on more than 1700 foundation piles. The main cause of honeycomb concrete in the beams and the walls was severely congested reinforcing steel and inadequate spacing between parallel layers. Inappropriate mix design with respect to coarse aggregate size of concrete, construction errors such as lack of cover and the use of low slump concrete without plasticiser admixtures, poor placement and inadequate vibration also contributed to honeycombing and segregation. The repair work proposed, involved the application of sprayed polymer modified mortar with and without fibres on more than ten thousand square meters of honeycomb concrete.
