The strata at the Ffos Las opencast coal site in South Wales have undergone extreme deformation which rendered the structural geology unpredictable. A new approach to rock engineering has been used in developing a hazard indicator system. The Ffos Las Alarm for Stability Hazard (FLASH) System uses binary switches on twenty site specific indicator parameters to provide an early warning of emerging geological conditions which could result in one or more of ten failure mechanisms. The approach used is applicable to other sites and ensures that all relevant parameters have been accounted for.
