The results of the determination of laboratory and in situ shear strength of systematic joint sets at different sites (mean values and dispersion parameters) are reviewed aiming at establishing empirical mathematical links between the shear strength and the sample sizes (scale effects). Such equations are used in the modelling and analysis of slope stability problems at different scales.
