Discussion reviewer A. P. Butcher

Building Research Establishment

The format of the discussion session was to take presentations prompted by the questions raised in the moderators presentation and to include discussion from the floor.

Dr J-F Naurov presented work on the possibility of using seismic inversion techniques for extrapolating geotechnical data around a borehole.

Site investigation practice in the offshore oil industry today involves two steps. An initial seismic survey is generally performed, with only single channel acquisition system. This is followed by a geotechnical investigation including one or several boreholes at the location of the future structure. These two surveys are quite distinct and the resulting seismic and geotechnical data are generally difficult to integrate and cross correlate.
