In this paper, some physical and mechanical properties of rubberized concretes with and without silica fume were studied. Two types of tyre rubber, namely crumb rubber and tyre chips, were utilized as fine and coarse aggregate, respectively. The rubberized concrete mixtures were produced by partially replacing the aggregate with rubber at different rubber contents ranging from 2.5 to 50% by total aggregate volume. Silica fume was included by partial substitution of cement at varying amounts of 5 to 20%. A total of 35 concrete mixtures with a water-cementitious material ratio of 0.60 were cast and tested for compressive strength, static modulus of elasticity, and split-tensile strength according to relevant ASTM standards. It was found that there was a marked reduction in the slump, unit weight, strength and elastic modulus with increasing rubber content. The use of the silica fume improved the mechanical properties of both non-rubberized and especially rubberized concretes.
