The proceedings of the symposium organized by the British
Geotechnical Society on field instrumentation in geotechnical
engineering published 15 years ago contained no separate
section for dams, and it is pleasing to see that it has been
included in this conference. An important book on
geotechnical instrumentation by Dunnicliff (reference 1) was
unfortunately published too late to be referred to in the
conference papers, most of which had already been drafted.
It devotes a complete chapter to embankment dams and
summarizes about 50 case histories which include Nurek, the
world's highest dam (300 m), as well as others of major
