The proceedings of the symposium organized by the British

Geotechnical Society on field instrumentation in geotechnical

engineering published 15 years ago contained no separate

section for dams, and it is pleasing to see that it has been

included in this conference. An important book on

geotechnical instrumentation by Dunnicliff (reference 1) was

unfortunately published too late to be referred to in the

conference papers, most of which had already been drafted.

It devotes a complete chapter to embankment dams and

summarizes about 50 case histories which include Nurek, the

world's highest dam (300 m), as well as others of major
