During this conference several contributors have acknowledged
in their presentation the financial support which their
research has received from the Science and Engineering
Research Council (SERC)• As you may be aware Professor S. E.
Brown and I co-ordinate the SERC programme in the geotechnics
area. Professor Wroth indicated, in his keynote address,
that this SERC Geotechnics Research Programme has identified
the need for an improved understanding of geotechnical
problems at large, and full-scale as its major focus.
