17. The Annapolis Royal tidal power station

SYNOPSIS The Annapolis tidal power plant is the first tidal station to be built in North America. Its principal purpose is to demonstrate the operation of a Straflo rim-generator turbine of large diameter. The tidal power station at Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, is the first North American hydro-electric plant to use tidal flows. It is also the first such plant to use a rim-generator straight-flow turbine.

The many studies of tidal-power development in the Bay of Fundy had suggested that there might be cost savings in the use of rim-generator rather than bulb-turbines.
