Mr North, what are the cost per metre and the carrying capacity of the Birmingham Maglev system?

The cost of track depends on the requirements of the particular installation and is heavily influenced by site conditions and operating or safety requirements (such as the need for a central walkway). The track at Birmingham was designed at an early stage in the vehiclefs development before vehicle tests or trials were undertaken. The design loading given was conservative but now, with the results of later work available, we are preparing designs for a much cheaper structure for future applications.
