In reading Papers 17, 18 and 19 one finds that, although they deal with recurring topics, the contributions by each Author are complementary to one another. The work of erection in the context of this conference I take to be that part of the construction of a steel box girder bridge which comprises the assembly and placing of structural steel fabricated components in their correct positions in the superstructure; this must be such that the bridge is capable of undertaking its design function under service conditions as required by the designer.

Included in the work of erection is the sub-assembly on the ground of steel components as delivered to the site, the provision of temporary works, craneage, etc., and the accurate alignment of components and splicing. Corrective measures may be required to redistribute self weight stresses or to amend camber profiles.
