Reporter-General:
Fabricators can manufacture steel box girder bridges to
almost any refinement of specification that may be required.
However, too great a refinement may cause the cost to be
such that such bridges become uneconomic. The existence
of buckles and other imperfections in commercially welded
steelwork is inevitable. The extent to which they may be
permitted to exist is a choice which must be made between
an expensive and uneconomic ideal and what may be achiev
ed at reasonable cost. The fabricator must do his part by
ensuring that imperfections are reduced to an acceptable
level at reasonable cost and that doing this is routine.
