The research of the Road Research Laboratory is recognized throughout the world. I have been concerned with some of the results of the field trials that have been carried out and it is my opinion that Britain has produced more information from trials of this sort than any other country.

2. The trials at Alconbury, High Wycombe and elsewhere have resulted in data which have been available for the choice of the initial life of the road, the type of surface and the frequency of roughening the road. The pavement design and subsequent improvement of the skidding resistance should be considered together, and the ideas in a report by the Road Research Laboratory1 are valuable.
