Summing up

The Transportation Engineering Conference three years ago covered the subject within the general theme of co-ordination. The conference this week has as its framework a number of particular items. My task in summing up can therefore be related to this framework.

We can note at once that, in each of the themes, the Papers and discussion show not only significant progress in the last three years but also an advanced state of the art. All themes have been subjected to detailed appraisal of high quality; not only are the Papers all advanced accounts of their subject, penetrating, analytical and thought-provoking, but they and the discussions show transportation engineering as a subject in which little is taken for granted and much effort and ingenuity are deployed in extending the boundaries of existing knowledge and performance even further.
