The founders of Géotechnique

The first issue of Géotechnique was published in June 1948, and the story of its origins is well known. Publication followed the wide circulation of a letter in July 1947 from ‘The Geotechnical Society’ to every western European country in which the proposal for such a publication was made. Listed at the bottom of the letter were eleven ‘Founders’, four from the UK and the remainder from elsewhere in Europe. The function of the ‘Founders’ was to contribute to the early issues of the journal and to assist with identifying other contributors. This paper gives brief vignettes of all these 11 eminent geotechnical engineers, together with two others who contributed significantly to the early success of the journal. It is hoped that these vignettes will serve to inspire present and future generations of geotechnical engineers, not only in their professions, but also in their enjoyment of working with fellow enthusiasts.

Le premier numéro de Géotechnique a été publié en1948 ; les circonstances de sa fondation sont bien connues.La publication fit suite à la diffusion, au mois dejuillet 1947, d'une lettre de la Geotechnical Society à chacun des pays de l'Europe de l'Ouest où la propositionde la création de cette publication avait été formulée. Au bas de la lettre se trouvait le nom des onze ≫ fondateurs≪, quatre desquels étaient britanniques, les septautres de différents pays d'Europe. La fonction de ces ≫ fondateurs ≪ était de contribuer aux premières éditions du journal, et d'assister dans l'identification d'autres collaborateurs. Dans la présente communication, nous présentons une esquisse sur chacun des onze éminents ingénieurs géotechniciens qui, avec deux collègues, contribuèrent de façon considérable au succès rapide decette publication. Nous espérons que ces portraits serviront à inspirer les générations actuelles et futures d'ingénieursgéotechniciens, non seulement dans leur profession, mais également dans le plaisir de travailler avec descollègues passionnés.
