I would like to present additional work on the Pilot scheme results. Figure 1.1 shows the close comparison with observed net gain at Shaw on the River Lambourn in 1968 and 1969 achieved by simulations. In comparing these observed and simulated results, it should be noted that Mander's concept recognizes the presence of the Winterbourne but does not take account of losses due to pumped discharge into the dry stream bed. These losses largely account for the difference between this simulation and the upper alternative solution for observed net gain. The simulation based on well hydraulics ignores the existence of the Winterbourne but allows for flow from the river into the aquifer when drawn down reverses ground water gradient adjacent to the river.
