A water-containing fine powder from crushed stone, called “cake”, is a by-product in the production of crushed stone and sand at crushing plants. In this study the Authors made investigations of the efficient use of this by-product cake, intending to use it as a road base material. Firstly the actual state of the cake was investigated. Next, the properties of the cake and the characteristics of mixtures stabilised with lime or cement were examined. The strength properties of ‘cake-mixed crushed stone’, consisting of a mixture of stabilised cake and crushed stone, were examined. Then, a test pavement was constructed, using the ‘cakemixed crushed stone’ for the pavement base, and a continuous structural analysis of the pavement was made with deflection as the assessment criterion. As a result, the ‘cake-mixed crushed stone’ was confirmed to be well worth using as a pavement base material.
