The paper presents the design and construction procedure of two experimental retaining, walls built using the reinforced soil technique with industrial wastes. The first wall was built from used timber railway sleepers (used as facing units), cut conveyor belts (as reinforcing straps) and colliery spoils (as fill). The second one was constructed in a different way with the use of geogrids and geotextiles as reinforcement, forming the facing by wrapping the reinforcement around the particular fill layers. Colliery spoils and pulverised fuel ashes were used as fill. Details of construction procedures of both walls are described as well as the results obtained from horizontal displacement measurements.
